FPL Challenge GW32 Picks: Four Points for Shots from Outside the Box

Who are the best FPL Challenge GW32 picks? Players will earn four points for shots attempted from outside the box this week. We use Opta data to find the top players to target in the Premier League.

Long time no see. Indeed, all going well, four NASA astronauts will have travelled to the moon and back between Manchester United’s last game against Bournemouth and their game against Leeds United on Monday night.

In Gameweek 32 of FPL Challenge, we’ll be thinking outside the box. We return with The Run In, a new six-week event to close the season, and first up is From Distance, where all shots taken from outside the penalty area are worth four points.

Let’s take a look at which players lead the way in this regard in 2025-26:

Unsurprisingly, free-kick savant Dominik Szoboszlai leads the way, and Bruno Fernandes isn’t far behind.

In fact, all 11 players who top this ranking are midfielders in FPL. You’d think that an obvious response would be to set up in a 1-1-3-1 formation this week, but we will, in fact, be using two midfielders and two forwards instead, and we’ll explain why later.

    Goalkeeper

David Raya: Arsenal vs Bournemouth (H)

We won’t be using any Arsenal attackers this week, and that means we can cash in on their defence by picking David Raya.

The Gunners clearly haven’t been at their best of late, but we expect them to get back to business in the Premier League. They face Bournemouth at Emirates Stadium this week, where Mikel Arteta’s side have conceded just one goal across their last six games in all competitions.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, although proving tough to beat, have failed to score in their last two away games.

With a UEFA Champions League second leg to come in midweek against Sporting CP, Arsenal will want to keep this game slow and steady, and it should result in few scoring opportunities overall.

    Defender

Ferdi Kadioglu: Brighton vs Burnley (A)

Our only defensive pick this week is Brighton’s swiss-army-knife Ferdi Kadioglu, who will face Burnley at Turf Moor this weekend.

Kadioglu can play almost anywhere, but he typically starts at left-back for Brighton, and given he’s right-footed, that gives him a nice angle for cutting inside for long-range shots – especially against opponents who are expected to sit back for large portions.

Indeed, Burnley face more long-range shots than any other side in the Premier League this season, at a rate of 5.6 per game. Just looking at their last 10 games, this figure increases slightly to 5.9 per game.

Kadioglu ranks seventh among defenders for shots from outside the box this season, with a rate of 0.43 per 90 minutes. Given his opposition this week, there’s a decent chance of a return.

    Midfielders

Dominik Szoboszlai: Liverpool vs Fulham (H)

Our first midfield pick is Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai, who, as previously mentioned, leads all players in the Premier League for shots from outside the penalty area this season, with 45.

But his impressive figures don’t stop there – he’s also had the most games with at least one shot from outside the box (22), and, among players with at least 1,000 minutes played, he leads the league for long-range shots per 90 minutes (1.6).

Alas, there are two reasons that the Hungarian won’t be our captain this week. Firstly, opponents Fulham only face 3.6 long-range shots per game, the sixth-best figure in the league. Secondly, Liverpool have a midweek Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain, and if they develop a lead against Fulham, Szoboszlai could be substituted early.

Bruno Fernandes: Manchester United vs Leeds (H)

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes makes our team once again this week, his fifth consecutive selection in this column.

As well as ranking second overall for total shots from outside the box (38), Fernandes also ranks joint-third for games with at least one shot from long range, with 20.

Teammate Matheus Cunha (20) equals Fernandes in this regard, and the Brazilian actually surpasses his captain for the percentage of starts with at least one shot from outside the box, with 79%.

For that reason, Cunha is a worthy consideration, but we must remember that other points-earning methods are still available to us this week, and Fernandes’ assist numbers mean we can still expect him to outscore most, if not all, players.

    He will captain our side.

    Forwards

Jarrod Bowen: West Ham vs Wolves (H)

Sticking with captains, the first of our two forwards is West Ham skipper Jarrod Bowen, who has the fourth-most points of any forward in FPL this season, with 143.

Bowen will be desperate to make amends for his penalty shootout miss against Leeds in the FA Cup last weekend, and there would be no better time to do so than a home match against bottom-of-the-league Wolves, who have faced the third-most shots from outside the box this season (148).

Wolves are no pushovers at the moment, but these are desperate times for West Ham, who currently sit in 18th place in the Premier League table. Bowen will be expected to step up.

Mateus Mané: Wolves vs West Ham (A)

Our final selection is Wolves youngster Mateus Mané, who may seem like an unusual selection until learning that he tops all forwards in FPL for shots from outside the box this season, with 22.

In fact, among all players with at least 1,000 minutes played in the Premier League this season, Szoboszlai (1.56) is the only player with more shots from outside the box per 90 minutes than Mané (1.54) this season.

Mané was substituted at half-time in Wolves’ last match, so be sure to keep an eye on their starting line-up against West Ham on Friday evening and switch him out for one of our honourable mentions (below) if he doesn’t make the XI.

    GW32 Honourable Mentions

Neco Williams leads all defenders for shots from outside the box this season with 23, while he also assisted two goals in Nottingham Forest’s last Premier League game, a 3-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

Marcus Tavernier would have made our team in any other week; he is just unfortunate to be playing away against Arsenal in Gameweek 32. He has registered at least one long-range attempt in 88% of his starts this season.

Erling Haaland doesn’t fare well for shots from distance, but he did score a hat-trick in Manchester City’s 4-0 victory against Liverpool in the FA Cup last weekend and is capable of returning more points than all players this week without even attempting to score from outside the box.
