Daughter of Michigan woman missing in Bahamas raises concerns about her disappearance

The daughter of a missing Michigan woman whose husband claims fell overboard from a small boat in the Bahamas says she has more concerns and questions about what happened to her mother than she does answers.

“I’m still in a lot of shock right now that this is even a conversation, but I’m doing okay for what it is,” Karli Aylesworth said in an interview with NBC 5 Investigates Wednesday.

Aylesworth described her 56-year-old mother Lynette Hooker as an experienced mariner who sold her Michigan home four years ago to live on a sailboat. She said her mother and stepfather, Brian Hooker, have been sailing around the Gulf of Mexico and recently sailed to the Bahamas.

The couple posted several videos of the sailing experiences to social media in recent weeks.

Aylesworth said her mother was experienced at sea, was in shape and less likely to fall overboard.

But that is the explanation Brian Hooker told authorities is what happened over the weekend while the couple was at sea onboard an eight dinghy.

“The longer this goes on, the more I doubt that she will be coming back,” Aylesworth said.

Aylesworth acknowledged she didn’t know what transpired but said she was concerned. She also said her mother and stepfather had been married for 25 years but described their relationship as “rocky at best.”

Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard said the military branch opened a criminal investigation into her disappearance on Wednesday, later announcing an American man was taken into custody and is being questioned in connection with Lynette Hooker’s disappearance. Authorities did not name the man in custody.

An initial statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force over the weekend said a male reported that he and his wife left Hope Town around 7:30 pm Saturday night aboard an 8-foot dinghy enroute to Elbow Cay.

Authorities included in their statement Brian Hooker’s account that Lynette fell overboard with the boat keys, causing the small boat’s engine to shut off – leading him to have to paddle to shore.

In a statement posted to Facebook this morning, Brian Hooker wrote: “I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy … Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart.”

His statement on social media went on to say that the search continues and that it is his “sole focus.”

Brian did not respond to questions via Facebook from the NBC Chicago Investigates team.

Aylesworth said that she had reached out to the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Embassy but had not received much information.

Authorities have said they’ve used professional divers and drones, but so far have not made any discoveries.
