Authorities saved a horse that was swept away during last weekend’s storms and became stranded in a flooded creek in McHenry County in a remarkable water rescue that spanned several hours on Saturday.
The beloved horse named Troy was on the mend and back on his home farm Wednesday afternoon after he was reunited with his family for the first time since the rescue on Anthony Road in unincorporated Marengo that took nearly 8 hours and more than two dozen emergency personnel, authorities said.
The moment was special for Ashley Beaulieu. Her family rescued Troy 18 years ago. At times during the rescue she didn’t think he was going to make it.
“It’s just really hard to see something suffering and your instinct is you just want to help it; you can’t just jump in to help him especially as your own horse—it’s awful,” she said. “Everyone was going through different emotions trying to figure out what the next step is to help him.”
The family’s barn hand was checking on Troy and his siblings following the storms when he noticed Troy was gone on Saturday morning.
The 20-year-old horse had ended up in the flooded creek near his family’s home. The barn hand tried to rescue him twice but couldn’t get to him because the current was swift and fast moving. The cold water in some parts was 15 feet deep.
Beaulieu said all she could do was wait for help to arrive.
“You could tell [Troy] he was looking at us wondering why we weren’t out there helping him and I felt so bad,” she said. “I didn’t want him to think we were just watching him.”
A team of emergency personnel, including firefighters, was called for animal water rescue. The horse was stranded on a small peninsula at least 600 feet away from shore.
“We started building a raft system that we moved the animal across with the boat across the creek,” said Marengo Fire Protection District Chief John Kimmel. “About 4 o’clock that afternoon we activated MABAS box alarm system for swift water technician.”
A veterinarian also made her way across the creek to administer aid and medication to Troy, who was already showing signs of hypothermia. She was able to stabilize him.
Rescue crews called in additional manpower to guide Troy out of the water, onto the road, and into a trailer where he was taken for further treatment.
“We would not have been able to do this completely without the Wisconsin Large Animal Rescue Team they were amazing,” said Dr. Nicky Wessel, Cutting Edge Equine Veterinary Services.
Beaulieu praised the rescue crews and said she’s grateful her horse is finally back home.
