Why Taylor Decker Isn’t a Bear, Lamar Jackson Receives Declan Doyle’s Message, Troy Aikman’s Mysterious Role With the Dolphins, and Other Bears Bullets

Day 79 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Happy Hump Day! Some news, nuggets, and tidbits that are Bears (and Bears-adjacent) for your Wednesday.

If you are wondering why Taylor Decker didn’t follow in the footsteps of Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and head to Chicago after being granted his release by the Detroit Lions, this from Justin Rogers (h/t Pro Football Talk) explains it all:

“He wants to play for a winner. Yet he’s kind of thinking about, ‘Is it cheap to go win somewhere else after you’ve invested all your energy emotionally and physically into one franchise?’ I will tell you that he’s pretty anti-playing for the Bears or Packers. That’s the Lions background in him. I know Ben Johnson did it and that was the right situation for him, but Taylor feels kind of dirty about the idea. It just isn’t interesting to him. I could see him joining a team mid-season, the further he gets away from football and games being played, injuries happening and the right offer occurs. I could also see him not playing.”

It is worth pointing out that Rogers says that the Bears head coach explored the possibility of adding Decker, but adds that Decker would feel dirty about playing for a division rival after suiting up for the Lions those many years. I get it. And, frankly, I appreciate it. Loyalty in American pro sports can be so hard to find. © Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images These Troy Aikman quotes (via CBS Sports) about his role with the Miami Dolphins are weirdly ominous and will likely be flagged by NFL teams who want to keep information to themselves when the MNF crew comes to town: “I think the Dolphins were wise in understanding my relationships around the league and knowing that I have information that they don’t have or can’t get. And I think they were smart in taking advantage of that, whether it was through me or through somebody else.” “I will say I’m pulling for the Dolphins, because now I have something at stake. And I think they hired two really talented, wonderful people, and I think that’s gonna prove itself out.” “I’ll continue to help in ways that are yet to be defined.” The NFL made it clear with how it handled the Tom Brady situation that it cares not about perceived conflicts of interest. But hearing a broadcaster who interacts with players openly talk about how he will leverage information that only he is privy to and that he has an open rooting interest won’t sit well with everyone. Maybe Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was right to duck Aikman last year.

We’re already seeing the Declan Doyle effect in Baltimore. The former Bears offensive coordinator left Chicago to join the Ravens in the same capacity (but with play-calling responsibilities). One of the things Doyle did upon arrival was call out quarterback Lamar Jackson and send a clear message about the importance of offseason workouts, which some pundits thought was a bold move. The result? Jackson showed up on the first day of voluntary workouts, which is a huge win for the first-time play-caller and the organization as a whole. This is the type of energy Ben Johnson installed when he became the Bears’ head coach, which makes it interesting to see a former assistant take on that bit of his personality. While the Bears are focused on building a stadium in Northwest Indiana or suburban Arlington Heights, Chicago’s mayor continues to push for a downtown stadium. On the one hand, I understand this is happening because putting in an effort that gives off “hey, we didn’t go down without a fight” vibes has value to someone somewhere on the political spectrum. But on the other hand, fighting a losing battle because you are disconnected from the reality of the situation is a rough look. The city is still in a position to do something neat with Soldier Field, but I doubt this regime will be in charge to see it through. (Front Office Sports)

One reason Kirk Cousins is looking forward to life as a member of the Raiders is because of the jerseys. No, really. “Best jerseys in pro sports I think,” Cousins said, via the Raiders’ official website. “I remember being in warm-ups once playing the Raiders and our head coach looked at me and said, ‘Those have to be the best jerseys that they are in pro sports.’ And I said, ‘You know what Coach, I have to agree. Those are really sharp.'” I never (ever!) thought I’d agree with Kirk Cousins on anything, but he isn’t wrong. A black Bo Jackson No. 34 jersey was (and still is) an iconic fashion staple in my eyes and has long been on my list of non-Bears jerseys I’d have no problem owning. (Photo by Adam Bettcher/Getty Images) An old friend finds a new home: NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter/X) the New York Giants are signing offensive lineman Lucas Patrick to a one-year deal. Patrick began his career with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Bears in 2022. His stint with the Giants will mark Patrick’s third different team in as many years since leaving Chicago. In New York, he will join a handful of ex-Bears, including Matt Nagy, Roy Robertson-Harris, and Tremaine Edmunds. In what is one of the weirdest side plots of the NFL offseason, New England Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel and The Athletic’s Dianna Russini have issued statements regarding photos of them together in Arizona that were published by the New York Post. I don’t want to pass judgment or comment on something that I’m not privy to, but the optics don’t look great (in terms of conflict of interest regarding a coach’s relationship with a reporter) and seeing the court of public opinion go off the rails suggests it is best to sit this one out and let those parties sort it out. Our friends at BN Bulls have a list of five dream candidates who could take over the front office and bring Chicago’s basketball team back to relevance. As someone who grew up watching the Jordan-era Bulls, I hope the organization figures it out. But as someone who has lived through the post-Jordan era, I fear that the powers that be will cut corners and deliver an underwhelming hire. Here’s to hoping for the best!
