Tuesday’s formal hiring and introduction of Michael Malone to lead the UNC men’s basketball program led to scores of UNC fans took to social media to share their celebration and reactions.
After being widely reported on Monday, Malone’s section was made official on Tuesday by UNC leaders approving his contract and scheduling an introductory press conference in Dean Smith Center. In the run-up to the evening event, many of the Carolina Athletics program’s social media accounts jumped into the action of welcoming Malone to campus.

As the press conference got underway, the gathered media members reported on what Malone and UNC athletics directors Bubba Cunningham and Steve Newmark said about the decision. Some of those details and observations gained traction among Tar Heel fans as they reacted.

Bubba Cunningham points out that Larry Brown is the only coach to win an NBA championship and NCAA championships. Malone has already won an NBA title, and Cunningham jokes that UNC will start moving the banners in Smith Center.

"Coach why would you leave the NBA?"
"Becasue I have a chance to be part of something special Something much bigger than myself. This is the only college job I would ever consider."

Unsurprisingly, Michael Malone says he wants to be a defensive-first team that dominates on the glass.
Also wants to push the pace offensively. Says UNC will be able to play in the halfcourt, but wants to emphasize ball movement and attacking defenses before they're set.

Michael Malone just thanked Hubert Davis for an “amazing” message sent yesterday.
“He allowed me to come in and watch and be a part of this family, which does not happen very often,” Malone said of Davis inviting him to practices this past season.

What we learned from Michael Malone's press conference:
– The process went on for "about 10 days"– Steve Newmark flew to Colorado to convince Malone on Easter Sunday– His daughter Bridget wanted him to take the job– Hubert Davis sent Malone an "amazing message" on Monday pic.twitter.com/ZkKh7nU9oI

Wow. The outfit Roy Williams is wearing to the introductory press conference for Michael Malone is the exact same he retired in just over 5 years ago.
Same jacket. Same incredible tie.
Simply put, it’s symbolic of a complete do-over at #UNC.

A “Bob’s” reference by new UNC head coach Michael Malone. That will curry favor with a certain demographic of the UNC alumni base.

Most of all, though, fans shared their own reactions and first impressions of the new head men’s basketball coach. Here are some of the highlights posted from the Carolina faithful who were either in the Smith Center on Tuesday or following along from afar:

I regret to inform all of you that I think I would potentially run through a brick wall for Michael Malone

"You can't put a dollar sign on toughness." – HC Michael Malone
Absolutely love it.

Really loved Coach’s presser. He’s personable, it’s clear that he takes no ?, he identified clear fundamentals that we need to work on (that we all know needed improvement), and he’s willing to make changes instead of keeping us stagnant.

Wasn’t going to come just due to time but so glad I did. Had to see the new era usher in. Very impressive answers. The Carolina Family is on board (hopefully all of us are). ? @UNC_Basketball pic.twitter.com/I91JnY58wM

No mentions of loving a white wife unprompted so I would say this UNC basketball coach introductory press conference went miles better than the last one.
