When two go, two more will come.
After the end of the Gar Forman and John Paxson era of Bulls basketball, there was a sense of hope. A perceived light at the end of the tunnel. A much-needed change in direction, and a chance to turn things around into the future.
And yet, here we are, six years later, at the end of the Artūras Karnišovas and Marc Eversley era — one that somehow brought a new definition of miserable, reaching even lower lows. Once again, at a familiar crossroads: a much-needed change in direction, and another chance to turn things around in the offseason.
With performances like these, is it really that difficult of an act to follow?
David Banks-USA TODAY SportsIs the Bulls’ Front Office an “Attractive” Opportunity?
If you ask Bulls insider K.C. Johnson, he’d say yes. In fact, he already has—and laid out why:
“The Bulls enter the offseason with a lottery pick, a potential second first-round pick depending on Portland’s play-in performance, and potentially $65M in cap space, which could be the highest in the league. It’s a major market and ownership that doesn’t change leadership often. Attractive job.”
And on the surface, that all checks out.
The Bulls have history. They have a global brand. They have a fanbase that will pack the United Center regardless of record. And they play in one of the biggest markets in the NBA.
All facts. No arguments there.
But there are layers to this job, important ones, that don’t show up in a quick summary.
The Coach(?)
The first is Billy Donovan.
The Bulls are clearly attached to their head coach. Donovan is a Hall of Fame coach, no question, but he’s also wired a certain way. He doesn’t embrace rebuilds. He doesn’t lean into losing for long-term gain. He wants to win games, now, with the best players available, even if they don’t fully align with a long-term vision.
So if you’re stepping into this front office role, one thing might already be decided for you: the head coach.
That matters.
Because building a roster and choosing a coach usually go hand in hand. Here, it might not.
Per our guy @JCowleyHoops the Bulls first priority is to do whatever it takes to keep Billy Donovan long term with the franchise.

Then there’s the Bulls’ medical staff. They’re one of the most talked-about groups in the league — and not always for the right reasons.
This past season alone raised lots of questions. Situations like Coby White, who played through injury and impacted both his performance and value. Or the decision-making around bringing in players like Anfernee Simons and Jaden Ivey despite existing injury concerns (no medical red flags anywhere?).
These are the kinds of internal dynamics a new front office would have to inherit, and navigate carefully.
Ownership
The final X-Factor in this gig is the guys whose last name is on the paychecks: Jerry and Michael Reinsdorf.
At the core of it, their priorities have been consistent for years. Stay competitive enough to keep fans engaged, but not necessarily aggressive enough to push all-in toward contention.
Since 2002, the Bulls have paid the seventh-lowest total luxury tax in the NBA. And those payments? They came in just two seasons, 2012 and 2015.
That’s it.
Spending into the tax has never been a cornerstone of how this franchise operates.
Michael Reinsdorf said it himself back in 2022:
“With the nature of the NBA and having a soft cap, if you want to compete for championships, you have to be willing to spend into the tax. But I don’t want to be the 8th seed or out of the playoffs and go into the luxury tax.”
And that right there tells you everything. Because if you’re the next executive walking into this job, you’re not just building a team.
You’re building within limits.
