Two weeks after Paramount’s victory, the White House issued a press release claiming that CNN was “lying” about its coverage of the war with Iran, in an attempt to undermine the administration’s military campaign.
On the same day, then-Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth strongly criticized a CNN article about the administration’s failure to anticipate the war’s impact on the Strait of Hormuz, calling it “fake news.”
Hegseth added, “The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.”
The criticism from the Trump White House has elevated as Ellison’s acquisition of the network neared completion, escalating tensions and raising concerns among CNN journalists.
Ellison Jr. promised to respect the network’s editorial independence, but its employees fear political interference and significant staff reductions, as it would be under the control of a single company, along with CBS News, should shareholders and regulators approve the deal.
Ellison and CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson have asserted in recent weeks that the network will not be subject to any political influence.
Nevertheless, several CNN journalists, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, expressed deep concern about the sale, hoping the deal would take as long as possible to finalize.
