A woman fought off an attacker who forced his way into her apartment in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood early Friday.
Police said just after midnight, the man entered the woman’s apartment in the 4200 block of Lincoln Avenue. A struggle occurred, and the woman was struck in the head. She suffered a cut to her scalp.
The assailant ran off, but officers arrested a 36-year-old man nearby.
One longtime resident in North Center, which is generally described safe, said safety is the number one priority.
“And I feel really sad that the lady would have to go through something like that,” Gary Kinsler said. “It be my mother, my sister. my aunt.”
Some neighbors say improvements can be made.
“The fact that I am hearing there was a home invasion right here. You have jewel right here,” neighborhood activist Stephanie Saffron said. “You have so many buildings, people with balconies. You can’t tell me that this is acceptable.”
But others say their neighborhood is safe, if you are careful.
“I don’t feel frightened,” said Kate Hildreth. “I feel bad for the person who was attacked. I just think we are going to have to be more vigilant ourselves.”
“You live in the city, you are always aware of what’s going on around you,” resident Tom Kaczinski said.
In a statement, 47th Ward Alderman Matt Martin said he “was horrified to hear about the home invasion that occurred earlier today in our North Center community. Everyone deserves to be and feel safe in our community without exception, especially in their homes.”
He also said he was “grateful to the Chicago Police officers who responded so quickly and arrested the suspect.”
“It’s a safe community,” Kinsler said. “i mean this is a really nice area…you know what? This is Good Friday, so lets be thankful that she is ok.”
Charges against the man in custody are expected in the next few days.
