Prospect Homers: James Triantos Goes Deep in 2nd Straight Game, Jefferson Rojas Joins Him!

The Cubs farm system has thinned out in recent years. And while that’s largely because some of their best prospects have emerged into big league talent one way (promotion) or another (trades), the thinning has been felt and seen in the various organizational prospect rankings around the industry.

And that matters. Because while the big league team does look competitive, you always need a pipeline of young talent to sustain any window, let alone to supplement a great season at the trade deadline.

And to be quite clear, the recent fallback is not *exclusively* because of graduations and trades. One player in particular, James Triantos, has simply lost some of his prospect shine as he’s climbed the ladder. Indeed, last season, in particular, was a rough one for Triantos, who slashed just .258/.315/.369 (76 wRC+) in his second stint at Iowa.

But things are getting off to a better start this year, already.

Triantos hit his first home run of the season last night, his ninth hit of the year through six games, and added ANOTHER long ball tonight as part of a 2-4 performance (and the game isn’t over yet…as of me typing this sentence).

Here’s a look at both blasts.

The first: 101.2 MPH, 389 Feet

James Triantos hits his first home run of the season: 101.2 mph | 33° LA | 389 ft He’s off to a strong start, batting .353 with a .918 OPS through his first 17 AB. pic.twitter.com/8umAXUlh9L

And the second: 104.9 MPH, 391 feet

James Triantos homers for the second straight game: 104.9 mph | 21° LA | 391 ftHe is 6 for his last 7 and is now batting .478 with a 1.239 OPS on the season. pic.twitter.com/k5u8gFITIL

The lack of power last season was probably the biggest negative on Triantos’ sheet. So seeing him start off this season strong in that department is a very good sign.

I don’t think there’s much hope left of him becoming a starting-caliber player, but that can change. And in the meantime, there are plenty of other ways to be valuable off the bench or as a trade chip (never want to think that way, but it’s true).

Setting him aside, there is another prospect homer to discuss tonight, and this one is from a guy who does still have all of the upside remaining: Jefferson Rojas.

Depending on where you look, Rojas is an occasional top-100 type, but we here at Bleacher Nation think he’s going to be a no-doubter come midseason. And tonight, Rojas hit his first home run of the season.

It was also the first home run he’s hit at the Double-A level, which he reached at the end of 2025.

Rojas, 20, is very young for this level, so any amount of offensive breakout would be an enormous win. I am very excited to see how this season progresses, and, with some luck, you can expect him to finish the year up at Triple-A Iowa.

Note: Seiya Suzuki is batting one spot ahead Rojas tonight and scored on that home run. As of this moment, Suzuki is 1-2 with a walk, a run, and an RBI. Rojas is 1-2 with a homer, a walk, a run, and 3 RBI.
