Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are two stalwarts of the India National Cricket Team. The RO-KO duo have won several matches for the Men in Blue in the T20 format and also in the ODI format as well. The iconic duo have retired from the T20I format and also the Test format. They only play the ODI format for the national side.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently participating in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, for the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), respectively. However, the question for now is whether both cricketers will be present in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
The future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has been the topic of much speculation. RO-KO’s recent performances in the ODI series should ensure that the two games' mainstays are sure-shot starters in the 2027 ODI World Cup; but, it is unknown whether the duo will travel to Africa for a final dance and play their final World Cup.
But head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are both silent and watchful, as no official statement has been provided on their participation in the World Cup next year. Ahead of the ODI World Cup, former World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh has dropped his comments on whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should play in the ODI World Cup.
Yuvraj Singh wants Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play the next World Cup
Yuvraj Singh said the duo have it in them to play in the next edition of the tournament. However, he sympathised with Gambhir and Agarkar, stating that they, too, must ensure that the young cricketers get enough games if Kohli and Rohit falter at the last minute.
Yuvraj used the example of Yashasvi Jaiswal, saying that the left-handed batter got a century in his last ODI for the Men in Blue, yet he still sits on the bench. Yuvi said, “The players who are at the end of their careers, giving clarity is very important. The captain, coach, and selectors should sit with the guys and explain how they are looking at things.”
“The conversation might not go well, but at least you tried on your end. Look at Yashasvi Jaiswal; he scored a century in his last ODI, but he is sitting out. When will you groom Jaiswal? You have the World Cup next year,” Yuvraj told Sports Tak.
“If you are going to the World Cup, you should have played several games. I am not saying you should drop someone. But if you're playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, you need to start preparing your squad now. You need to give them many games. Take a decision, it shouldn't happen at the last minute that one of your senior players gets injured and there's no young player.”
It shouldn't be that your second line isn't ready- Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh also mentioned that Gambhir and Agarkar should sit with Rohit and Kohli and have a clear and open discussion with them, let them know about the team management plans so that there is no controversy and no one is kept in the dark.
“Virat Kohli has had a superb series. Rohit has been performing consistently. If a situation comes up in the next 1.5 years, it shouldn't be that your second line isn't ready. Now, ODI cricket isn't played as much. Whoever you want to play, make sure you give them enough time,” said Yuvraj.
“Senior players are important. I don't know what is going on in Rohit and Virat's minds. It looks like they're thinking of the World Cup. But I think that's the call they and the selectors need to take.”
“There has to be clarity. You should be able to sit in a room and discuss things. It's tough. If someone tells you they are looking ahead, you won't be able to take it, but one year down the line, you'd appreciate that someone gave you clarity,” he added.
