The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has been running, with the first round fixture having been over. The second round begins today with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) facing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Tomorrow, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be up against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their second match. Ahead of that former CSK batter has raised concerns over Ruturaj Gaikwad.
CSK have lost their first match against Rajasthan Royals (RR). They were completely outplayed by the Royals in their first game of the tournament. Ahead of the second match against PBKS, former CSK batter Subramanium Badrinath has called Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy into question. Ruturaj Gaikwad has lost the joint-most matches as captain after 20 games.
Under his captaincy, the CSK has lost 12 out of the last 20 matches. CSK last season finished at the bottom of the table, le losing out on 10 matches, which was their worst ever season in IPL history. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s side started the new season on a similar note. The batting department of CSK has not been up to the mark in this season as well.
Speaking on Gaikwad’s captaincy on the YouTube channel, Badrinath said, "His captaincy has been a big question mark. The side's energy seemed very low in the last match. His decisions are also questionable. And his captaincy record is also not good." The Super Kings are on a five-match losing streak under Ruturaj Gaikwad.
CSK cannot find its rhythm
Despite trading Sanju Samson from the Royals, the Yellow Army failed to win their first game. They only scored 127 runs as RR chased down the target in just 12.1 overs. Gaikwad has not been able to come out of the shadow of MS Dhoni, as CSK have won only one match without the former India captain.
Badrinath highly praised the captain of PBKS, Shreyas Iyer, who is the next opponent of CSK. Iyer has been excellent taking the team to the final of the IPL 2025, however, eventually losing against RCB.
PBKS look like a well-oiled machine- S Badrinath
He said, "He (Iyer) is thriving as a captain. PBKS look like a well-oiled machine under him, with the Indian youngsters firing. Even the foreign youngsters seem to be firing like Cooper Connolly in the last match. Punjab Kings will be a force to be reckoned with, and CSK has to play really good cricket to beat them."
PBKS under Shreyas Iyer qualified for the playoffs after a decade. Though they finished as runners-up, they were excellent throughout the season. Iyer has led the side from the front, winning low-scoring thrillers as well last season. They started off well this season with a win against the Gujarat Titans in their first home game.
In the last five CSK vs PBKS matches, the side from Punjab have the upper hand, winning four games out of the five. The last time CSK won was back in 2024. It is going to be another fantastic match between these two sides.
