PHOENIX — The Arizona Cardinals do not know who their next franchise quarterback will be.
What they do know is that it won’t be Kyler Murray, who was released this offseason and has since signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
It was a move beneficial for all sides moving forward in the eyes of new Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur.
“A lot of respect for him. Wish him the best,” LaFleur said Monday at the annual NFL owners meeting. “Did some good stuff here, but sometimes it’s just time for a change for both sides. So just wish him the best and never going to wish ill will on anybody.
“It’s one of those things that sometimes it’s just good for both parties to part ways, if you will,” the head coach added. “He had a lot of success here. I know when I was on the other sideline, albeit (I’m) not Robert Saleh or one of the defensive coaches, but he was a problem.”

The writing was on the wall well before Murray’s official release that his time with the Cardinals was coming to a close.
The Cardinals now push forward without Murray on the roster for the first time since 2018. Jacoby Brissett is expected to lead the charge this year at quarterback, who filled in as Arizona’s starter last year for 12 games with Murray sidelined with a midfoot sprain.
The Cardinals also have new addition Gardner Minshew as a potential option in 2026.
There’s also the potential Arizona takes a chance with a quarterback prospect this NFL Draft. Arizona is reportedly hosting both Ty Simpson (Alabama) and Carson Beck (Miami) for top 30 visits.

Drew Allar (Penn State) and Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) are other prospects the Cardinals could potentially kick the tires on as later-round fliers.
“Let’s call it what it is, guys. The quarterback position is the most important position in all of sports,” LaFleur said. “We know that.”
“There were lengthy conversations and so many different aspects of it and there will continue to be until we figure out exactly how we have the most perfect room possible. We like where we’re at right now, but if there’s a guy to add, we’re going to add.”
Either way, Arizona now gets a chance to handpick its next franchise quarterback for the first time since 2019.
As for Murray, he gets a much-needed fresh start with head coach Kevin O’Connell, who is known for turning around veteran quarterbacks, and the Vikings.
The one-year prove-it deal is a low-risk, high-reward scenario for the Vikings. If Murray doesn’t pan out, it was only a one-year experiment.
Murray, however, needs a bounce-back effort at his second NFL stop if he hopes to be the next successful reclamation project in the league.
