Rochester’s L3Harris has a connection to the upcoming Artemis II launch

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — The Artemis II mission is set to blast off at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday evening. It will mark the first moon trip in 53 years.

Four astronauts will fly by the moon, travel another several thousand miles, and then come back to Earth. The mission will last 10 days and will travel 250,000 miles farther into space than Apollo 13, the last trip to the moon. The two-hour launch window will begin at 6:24 p.m. Eastern Time.

Rochester has a connection to the Artemis II launch. L3Harris says a tactical radio designed and developed in Rochester will be aboard the mission. Timothy Soine, director of product management at L3Harris, explained how the company is involved.

“We have a number of different capabilities that are going into the Artemis, primarily here in the Rochester communications group,” Soine said. “We have our 70 and 50 m radio. This is primarily a military tactical radio that is designed for the harshest environments in the world, here down on Earth.”

After liftoff, the astronauts will spend the first 25 hours circling Earth in a high, lopsided orbit. Like Apollo, the Artemis mission is expected to end with a splashdown homecoming into the Pacific.
