Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha could continue as the interim chief selector of the men's national cricket team due to VVS Laxman's influence. According to a report by The Times of India, the BCCI may retain the current arrangement rather than appoint a new chairman ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
With less than a year until the tournament, the board must find a successor to Ajit Agarkar, who opted against seeking an extension. The BCCI must also consider whether a new chairman's vision would align with the team's existing plans during a crucial phase of its World Cup preparations.
VVS Laxman heads the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. According to The Times of India, his growing influence over selection matters could help Pragyan Ojha retain the interim chief selector's role.
The BCCI had hoped Ajit Agarkar would remain in the position until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but he opted against seeking an extension.
“BCCI would have preferred continuity with Agarkar staying on till the World Cup, but things didn’t go as expected. If a new chairman of selection committee comes in, there’s a chance his vision could be different from the ones working now. So, the board will have to gauge the vision of the new selector,” a source told TOI.
“With Laxman’s growing influence, the board may let things remain the way they are at present,” the source added.
BCCI Seeks Ajit Agarkar's Successor After Successful Tenure
Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chairman of the senior men's selection committee ended on October 4 after he opted against seeking an extension. Appointed in July 2023, he oversaw India's T20 World Cup victories in 2024 and 2026, along with the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph.
The BCCI invited applications for the vacant West Zone position on its five-member selection panel, with the deadline set for October 14. Candidates must have retired at least five years ago and meet one of these playing criteria: seven Test matches, 30 first-class games, or 10 ODIs and 20 first-class appearances.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel was widely expected to apply for the vacancy and potentially replace Agarkar. However, TOI reported that he did not submit an application before the deadline.
BCCI May Extend SS Das' Tenure Ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup
The current selection panel includes Ojha, SS Das, RP Singh and Ajay Ratra. Das is due to complete his maximum four-year tenure as a national selector in December, but the BCCI could consider allowing him to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The board is keen to maintain continuity within the committee during the final phase of preparations for the tournament and avoid extensive changes to the selection setup.
The panel announced India's squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand on Tuesday, October 6. The series will begin at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22.
Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to international cricket after a four-year absence. Jasprit Bumrah was rested for the T20I series, with the subsequent ODI and Test assignments in mind.
