CUBS LINEUP — For however good the conditions were for hitting last night (warm, wind howling out), the opposite is true tonight. The temp at Wrigley will be under 50 degrees at game time and the wind is blowing in hard from left field. Maybe that’ll slow down the Cubs lineup, but it should be helpful for Jameson Taillon, who is looking to propel the Cubs to their first series win of the season.
Let’s see how Craig Counsell is lining them up tonight, as we hope the rain subsides before first pitch.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Nico Hoerner, 2B Dansby Swanson, SS Moises Ballesteros, DH Matt Shaw, RF Miguel Amaya, CEven though there’s another right-handed pitcher on the mound tonight against the Cubs, Matt Shaw is getting the start, not Michael Confoto. And that’s probably at least partially because Angels starter Jose Soriano has carried reverse splits throughout his career:
LHH: .210/.302/.299 (.272 wOBA) RHH: .261/.354/.384 (.329 wOBA)Those are some dramatic splits, though I’ll note that the gap has been narrowing as the years have gone by.
Of note, Miguel Amaya, starting behind the plate tonight, also has reverse splits for a righty, meaning he’s hit righties (110 wRC+) far better than he’s hit lefties (54 wRC+) for his career. And unlike Soriano, that was even more dramatic last season: 144 wRC+ vs RHP, 41 wRC+ vs lefties. So strange.
Anyway, those are the only two changes to the Cubs lineup tonight of note. Everyone else is in their usual spot.
Los Angeles Angels Lineup:
Zach Neto, SS Mike Trout, CF Nolan Schanuel, 1B Jorge Soler, DH Jeimer Candelario, 3B Jo Adell, LF Josh Lowe, LF Logan O’Hoppe, C Oswald Peraza, 2BPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Jameson Taillon, RHP
Despite finishing last season very strong, Jameson Taillon had about as rough a Spring Training as you’ll ever see: 13.1 IP, 26H, 26 ER, 9BB, 12Ks … with 10 home runs. Even if he was just “working” on something, that is yikes-level concern in terms of results. Worse, his velocity was notably down, which doesn’t inspire confidence for the 34-year-old righty.
Even still, I’m not ready to bet against him just yet. My concern radar is up, no doubt, but this is still a guy who finished last season with a 1.85 ERA over his final seven regular-season starts followed by two solid outings in the postseason (2.25 ERA over 8.0 IP). He’s also been streaky throughout his time with the Cubs, so even if he is struggling right now, that doesn’t mean he can’t figure it out. The Cubs also have Justin Steele returning in a couple of months plus Javier Assad, Colin Rea, and Jaxon Wiggins available to take over if it goes truly sideways for Jamo this year.
In either case, the Angels aren’t a particularly potent lineup (there are definitely some hitters, though) and the weather is pitcher-friendly tonight. So Jameson Taillon is in a good position to succeed.
Los Angeles Angels: José Soriano, RHP
Jose Soriano made 31 starts last season, pitching to a 4.26 ERA with much stronger peripherals (4.03 xERA, 3.73 FIP). That said, his walk rate has been pretty high throughout his career (10.7%), so it will behoove this Cubs lineup to be extra patient tonight. Fortunately, they’re pretty good about that.
Cubs Lineup Stats:
13.6 BB% (3rd in MLB) O-swing rate: 30.0% (10th best) Swing Rate: 43.1% (t-2nd lowest)Of course, Soriano was able to succeed in his first start of the year even despite handing out four free passes over 6.0 innings of work against the Astros: 6.0 IP, 2H, 0ER, 4BB, 7K.
Note: Soriano has also carried reverse splits throughout his career, with fellow righties hitting him a lot better than lefties. He also throws incredibly hard (98.5 MPH average fastball velo with a 97.4 MPH sinker and a 91.6 MPH slider to go along with his splitter and knuckle curve).
Bottom line, he’s not going to be an easy matchup for the Cubs lineup, especially in these conditions.
