University of Rochester reopens larger Clinical Research Center three years after flood

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The University of Rochester reopened its newly redesigned Clinical Research Center more than two years after a devastating flood destroyed the facility. A fire suppression system valve burst in December 2022, sending about 170 gallons of water per minute cascading through the building.

Dr. Martin Zand, co-director of the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, witnessed the damage firsthand.

“There was literally Niagara Falls down the staircase and two and a half inches of water when I got there covering the floor of the clinical research center and coming through the ceiling and the walls,” Zahn said. “So, everything was completely soaked and ruined.” The flood disrupted the Clinical Research Center and four floors above it.

The facility is used by investigators to conduct clinical trials for new therapies and study diseases including neuromuscular conditions and pediatric illnesses. Within 48 hours, staff identified alternative space for patients. The team relocated equipment and resumed operations within a week in the Saunders building, operating at three-quarters of their original capacity.

“We went into disaster recovery mode, and our first thoughts were, how are we going to take care of the patients in our community who are coming here for cutting-edge research therapies,” Zahn said.

The facility was completely gutted and redesigned. The old facility was about 15 years old and had previously served as a clinic before becoming the clinical research center. The new space includes a modern pediatric unit specially designed for research with children, an overnight stay unit, a unit for walking capacity studies and a complete neuromuscular lab. The lab includes a facility to perform minor procedures that are part of research studies.

Dr. Karen Wilson, a pediatrician and clinical researcher, said patients understood the temporary relocation. The Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute conducts clinical research and clinical trials across the region. “We’re really, really proud of that work,” Wilson said. “And we’re excited that we can bring our patients back again to this new and amazing space.”

Officials called the flood a blessing in disguise. The university had been planning to renovate the Clinical Research Center for several years, but the flood accelerated the timeline and allowed for a complete redesign.

“Starting from scratch is often the best way to get the best use of the space and a modern facility,” Zahn said.

The university offers several ways for people to learn about clinical trials. The University of Rochester Medical Center website lists available trials, and the National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center has a dedicated webpage. Individual departments also advertise their clinical trials. Patients can also receive information about eligible clinical trials through MyChart in eRecord.
