Several counties across the Chicago area were under severe thunderstorm watches and warnings as a morning line made its way through — and more is on the way.
A ground stop was issued for flights heading to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport due to thunderstorms Tuesday morning.
Waves of showers and storms were in the forecast, along with a 30-degree temperature drop.
As of early Tuesday morning, a line of showers and lightning was passing through counties to the north and west of Chicago, Live Doppler 5 radar showed.
Warnings were issued through at least 10:45 a.m. for some locations, while a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for nearly the entire Chicago area, and portions of northwest Indiana until 5 p.m. CT.
Hail of up to an inch in diameter, or about the size of a quarter, along with wind gusts of up to 60 mph were reported with the storms.
The first window of potentially severe weather was expected to come to an end around 12 p.m., meanwhile another wave is expected to arrive for the afternoon and evening hours.
