Andy Burnham is rushing to axe photo ID checks at polling stations ahead of the next election, according to reports.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Burnham has allegedly drafted up new proposals in the Representation of the People Bill, intended o expand the type of eligible ID that can be used to include bank cards with no photograph of the owner.
New legislation was brought in 2023 under the Conservatives meaning voters would have to bring photo ID with them in order to vote.
The reported changes, which also include a clamp down on foreign donations, come amid rising speculation that Burnham may call an election with one Labour source saying: “The two big tests – first Makerfield and now Holborn & St Pancras – Andy Burnham has proved one way or another that he can beat them both.”
The source added: “Some people around him are talking [an early election] up.”
