King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel to the US at the end of April on a state visit to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
Charles will then travel on to Bermuda without Camilla for a royal visit to the British Overseas Territory.
The controversial trip to the US, which will include a state banquet at the White House and an address by the King to Congress, is on the advice of the UK government and will “celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States”, the palace said.
No further details of the visits have been released at this stage but sources have previously suggested that the King and Queen were set to go to New York as well as Washington.
Keir Starmer has been under pressure from senior Labour figures and others to cancel or delay the visit after US President Donald Trump’s repeated insults and criticism of Britain’s refusal to join his war on Iran.
But although polls suggest that Starmer’s increasing willingness to stand up to Trump has boosted his popularity, it appears cancelling or delaying the state visit was a snub too far for the prime minister.
It will be the King’s first state visit to the US. His late mother Queen Elizabeth II undertook four outward state visits to the US in 1957, 1976, 1991 and 2007.
As Prince of Wales, Charles visited the United States 19 times, including with the then Duchess of Cornwall on their first joint official tour in 2005.
Camilla, who does not get on well with hot weather, will not join her husband in Bermuda. Royal sources said there was no particular reason and pointed out that it was not uncommon for her to miss some royal trips.
