Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty said Sunday that the strength of the Arab world lies in its unity, stressing that safeguarding national interests and sovereignty depends on the ability to act collectively under a spirit of shared responsibility.
Addressing the 165th Ordinary Session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, Abdelatty underlined that enhancing the role of the Arab League and activating its mechanisms are essential at this delicate stage, rejecting any attempts to undermine its role.
He noted that joint Arab action has become a strategic necessity, representing the main framework for coordinating positions in the face of common challenges.
The minister reiterated Egypt’s call for establishing a joint Arab force to defend member states, stressing that such a step would send a clear message that the Arab region is not an arena for settling external conflicts or jeopardizing the security of its peoples.
Abdelatty extended thanks to UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed for his efforts during the 164th session, and welcomed Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani as the new chair.
He also expressed high appreciation for Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit’s ten years of service during a pivotal era for the Arab nation.
