‘Sky’s the limit’: Labaron Philon Jr. shines in the Sweet 16

Labaron Philon Jr. left it all on the court for Alabama in its 90-77 loss to one-seeded Michigan.

The superstar guard did not disappoint in what is likely his last game in the crimson and white, tying a career high in points with 35 and leading the team with seven rebounds and four assists. He even took care of the ball, committing just one turnover in 39 minutes.

Philon also eclipsed 700 points on the season during a solo 6-0 run late in the first half, joining fellow Alabama natives Mark Sears and Reggie King in the top three.

“He gave it his all,” guard Houston Mallette said. “Hats off to this guy. His approach everyday in practice, the weightroom, treatment, his nutrition, all of the above he’s taken tremendous growth in.”

Mallette, a graduate guard who played his last game with the Crimson Tide on Friday, was not short of praise for his teammate, roommate and friend.

“Sky’s the limit for this guy. You guys see it. I think he’s the best guard in the country far and away in my opinion,” Mallette continued. “I love him. He’s amazing.”

Last summer, Philon went to the NBA Combine to be evaluated by league scouts and get a better idea of where he could be selected in the draft. The overwhelming sentiment was that the freshman needed to become a better 3-point shooter.

Flash forward to the end of the season, Philon shot 39.7% from beyond the arc on nearly six attempts per game in 2025. In the biggest game of the season against one-seeded Michigan, he knocked down a career-high six from range.

His ability to carry Alabama this year, particularly in the clutch, was special to watch. What was likely his final game was no different.

“He gets 35 [points], and I thought we did a pretty good job on him,” Michigan head coach Dusty May said.

Michigan All-American forward Yaxel Lendenborg, who finished the game with 23 points and 12 rebounds, said Philon might be the best guard he’s ever played against.

There is no timetable on Philon’s official announcement to enter the NBA Draft, but most fans, and even head coach Nate Oats, feel like it’s a foregone conclusion.

“I don’t really think he’s got much of a decision,” coach Oats said. “He came back to do what he did, to play his way up into the [NBA draft] lottery.”
