Well, you really won’t experience a less stressful Cubs game than the one we just saw this afternoon. I mean, seriously, there wasn’t a moment that this one felt out of their control.
Offensively, the Cubs popped off 10 runs on nine hits and six walks, including a double (Hoerner), and two homers from Miguel Amaya (first Cubs homer of the year) and Ian Happ (no wind, no problem). Defensively, I saw a really well caught game from Miguel Amaya, and Dansby Swanson flashed some leather, as he does. On the bases, the Cubs ran well, with both PCA (x2) and Hoerner swiping bags.
Meanwhile, the bullpen (Phil Maton, Caleb Thielbar, and Jacob Webb) was darn well close to perfect (2.2 IP, 0H, 0ER, 3BB, 2K).
The story of the game, however, was obviously Cade Horton, today’s Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game.
It’s tough to imagine that going any better for Horton, who not only cruised through 6.1 innings of two-run ball with four strikeouts and just one walk, but did so on a breezy 75 pitches.
Horton mixed in five different pitches at least eight times today and averaged over 95 MPH on his fastball (touching 97 at one point). He looked every bit as good as he did last season and this spring. The efficiency was just a nice bonus, especially as it’s early in the year.
The Nationals aren’t a particularly good offense, but man, did he dominate them.
Again, just an easy breezy win for your Saturday afternoon, and now the Cubs have a shot to take the series tomorrow at Wrigley Field with Shota Imanaga on the mound. Great stuff. Go Cubs.
