The pictures that show just how divided Trump’s America really is

Millions of people attended demonstrations across the United States on Saturday as they rallied against the Trump administration.

There were more than 3,100 “No Kings” protests due to take place, in cities and small towns around the country.

A flagship event is being held in Minnesota’s Twin Cities — Minneapolis and St Pauls — where residents have suffered the worst effects of the President’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.

Renee Good and Alex Pretti were both killed by ICE agents in the city earlier this year. Members of the Trump administration later tried to blame the two residents for their own deaths, with then Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claiming Pretti “committed an act of domestic terrorism”, without any evidence to support this.

Videos that circulated online challenged this version of events, and Trump changed his stance, later blaming Democrats for what happened rather than focussing on the victims’ actions.

Bruce Springsteen is expected to perform at the flagship Minneapolis event later today. He released a protest anthem “Streets of Minneapolis” in response to ICE operations earlier this year, and dedicated it to the city’s residents as well as the memory of Good and Pretti.

Protesters in Washington walked across the Memorial Bridge from Virginia, with many holding huge effigies of Trump, as well as members of his administration.

Others held signs that read “No War”, “No ICE”, and “Trump for Prison”.

The No Kings protests — the third wave of demonstrations of this kind — are in response to ICE activities, as well as the affordability crisis, and the war on Iran.

Organisers have said that they expect Saturday’s demonstrations to be “the biggest protest in American history”.

Thousands also gathered in Nashville and Kentucky, with protests expected to continue elsewhere this afternoon.

Indivisible is one of the groups co-ordinating the action. The organisation was created in 2016 after Trump was first elected as President, and brings together a broad network of organisations.

Indivisible co-founder Leah Greenberg told The Guardian: “Every No Kings is going to be about the issues that are driving people most at the moment, and it’s going to be about the collective ways in which they begin to harm our democracy”.

There are similar demonstrations happening across the globe, with people taking to the streets in Italy, France, Germany, and Spain.

Trump has responded to demonstrations by mocking past events and claiming that protesters “are not representative of the people of our country”.

But the president is facing increasing domestic pressure, as his net approval rating now sits at -18 as of 23 March, lower than Biden and Trump’s first term at the same point.

His decision to go to war with Iran has led to skyrocketing oil prices, which is pushing up supermarket and energy costs in the US.

Many of those who were once loyal to the MAGA movement, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, have felt betrayed by his foreign policy decisions, having previously promised that he would put “American first”, and stay away from getting involved in international conflict.

Many in the Republican movement fear the upcoming mid-term elections due to the fallout from the Iran war and Epstein scandal.

When asked about today’s demonstrations, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said: “The only people who care about these Trump Derangement Therapy Sessions are the reporters who are paid to cover them.”
