CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs dropped their home opener on Thursday, which forced us to stew through the morning and early afternoon on Friday … that is, until news of the Nico Hoerner extension turned our weekend around. Now, they just have to win back-to-back games to take this series and really have us feeling good heading into the first full week of the regular season.
And, hey, with Cade Horton on the mound against Miles Mikolas, I like the Cubs chances today. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 2 of 162.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Nico Hoerner, 2B Dansby Swanson, SS Moises Ballesteros, DH Matt Shaw, RF Miguel Amaya, CDespite logging plenty of hits and walks on Thursday, the Cubs couldn’t really cash in with a big hit in the right moment to get themselves back in that game. But this current group of Cubs hitters has had a LOT of success against Mikolas, especially the last few years, with four guys standing out among the pack:
Ian Happ (46 ABs): .304/.333/.435 Nico Hoerner (39 ABs): .359/.359/.513; HR Michael Busch (15 ABs): .400/.438/1.000; 3 HRsBut no matchup has been more of a nightmare for Mikolas than Pete Crow-Armstrong. In just nine at-bats against the former Cardinal, PCA has seven hits, including FIVE homers and a double. That is like … what? So, yeah, I put a couple of bones on PCA to homer today. Just sayin’.
As for the Cubs lineup, it’s pretty close to Opening Day, with just Miguel Amaya stepping in for Carson Kelly, but sliding to ninth, while Matt Shaw, still in right field, moves up to eighth.
I think it’s clear now, by the way, that Shaw is getting the full runway in right field while Suzuki was gone. If Conforto was going to start regularly in Suzuki’s absence, it probably would’ve happened in one of these first two games.
Washington Nationals Lineup:
James Wood, RF Drew Millas, C Luis Garcia Jr., 1B Daylen Lile, LF Brady House, 3B Jorbit Vivas, 2B Nasim Nuñez, SS Jose Tena, DH Jacob Young, CFPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, RHP
Cade Horton had a brilliant rookie season for the Cubs in 2025, though it ended on a bit of a downer, as he injured himself just before the playoffs began. Who knows what would’ve happened if the Cubs had him available. Alas.
The good news is that he’s healthy and has looked INCREDIBLY impressive throughout the spring. This is a big season for Horton, who has a real shot to be the homegrown Ace this team has struggled to develop internally for years.
Horton faced the Nationals once last season, on June 3, and he went 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk.
Washington Nationals: Miles Mikolas, RHP
Early in his tenure with the Cardinals, Miles Mikolas had a lot of success against the Cubs (2018-2022): Over 16 games, he maintained a 2.16 ERA, with the Cubs slashing just .249/.292/.354 (.281 wOBA) off him overall. But the last three years?
Yeah, the last three years, they OWN him: 9 games, 6.96 ERA, with a slash line of .301/.339/.585.
Part of Mikolas’ problem, it seems, is his increasing struggles with left-handed batters. Over his last 264.2 IP against lefties (last three seasons), the lefties are slashing .279/.314/.488 (.340 wOBA). Then again, righties aren’t too far behind: .280/.316/.463 (.334 wOBA).
This Cubs lineup SHOULD feast today at Wrigley. Let’s just see if they actually bring it.
