Pair laced lasagna in attempt to induce miscarriage, authorities say

Two people have been arrested in northeastern Iowa in an unusual case involving lasagna tainted with a narcotic, law enforcement stated.

Sheriff’s officials in the city of Decorah said Matthew Uthoff and Amber Dena Snow laced a family-sized pan of lasagna with oxycodone, intending to cause a woman’s miscarriage. Decorah is approximately 100 miles north of Cedar Rapids.

WHO-TV, the NBC affiliate in Des Moines, reported an investigation launched in January revealed Snow and a second person, later identified as Uthoff, allegedly put the oxycodone in the lasagna before giving it to a family member in late December.

Authorities have not said how they uncovered the plot.

Sheriff’s officials said both Snow and Uthoff spoke to investigators about the drug-tainted lasagna and discussed it through messages on their phones. Authorities said the victim wasn’t aware of their plane to cause her miscarriage.

Uthoff and Snow face charges of intentionally ending a pregnancy without the person’s knowledge or consent, child endangerment and giving a harmful substance to adults and juveniles.

Both remain in the Winneshiek County Jail under a $100,000 cash bond.
