Two people are facing charges after the deadly shooting of a contractor who was shot and killed just blocks from Chicago’s United Center, near the offices where he worked.
Nassie Mason, 28, and Erving Harris, 31, were both charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 67-year-old Jerry Lewis.
Lewis was killed just before 1 p.m. Tuesday while walking on the street outside a condo building in the 2100 block of West Madison Street. Police said he was approached by two people guns, who then shot him in the head.
Mason and Harris were taken into custody by Chicago Police just minutes after the shooting, police said.
“They were identified as the offenders who, minutes earlier, shot and killed a 67-year-old male victim in the 2100 block of W. Madison (12th District),” police said. “The offenders were quickly placed into custody and subsequently charged accordingly.”
On Thursday, both were charged with first-degree murder and for being felons in possession of a weapon. They are expected to appear in court Friday.
Lewis was a successful contractor and an integral piece in the so-called 1901 project, a $7 billion development around the United Center touted as the largest private investment in Chicago’s West Side.
“He was such a mentor. He was a mentor to many,” said Traci Quinn, CEO of the Pink Hats Construction and Development group, which Lewis worked with. “He was selfless, but he was also a no nonsense honey. He did not play, but he’s changed a lot of people’s lives in the community and here in the city of Chicago.”
Lewis leaves behind a wife and son. A motive for his killing was not immediately released.
