“I think this is the argument,” he said. “The previous generation of cars, we would say are perfectly suited to a track like Suzuka, because the cars in the past had a lot of high-speed downforce, and I think the lap times we saw last year were probably the fastest lap times we’ve ever seen in Suzuka, yet the race was super boring,” he said.
That contrast – breathtaking speed versus processional racing - is exactly what the 2026 rules were designed to fix. With new tools like Overtake Mode and Straight Mode, the current generation of cars has already produced closer, more dynamic racing across the opening rounds.
But Suzuka, with its narrow racing line and limited overtaking zones, represents a very different kind of challenge.
The ultimate test for 2026?
Russell believes this weekend will act as a proving ground for whether the regulation overhaul has truly delivered on its promise.
“So yes, we will be slower through the Esses this year, and I think it will probably be an easy one-stop, the same as last year. But it was an easy one-stop in China, and it was a very exciting race,” he explained.

Now, all eyes are on Suzuka to see if it can follow suit.
“I guess this will be a good test for the regulations, if this track now becomes an exciting race and it was once a boring race, that will be quite interesting,” he added.
It’s a telling remark from the current points leader – less prediction, more challenge thrown down to the sport itself.
Mercedes banking on straight-line strength
Beyond the broader regulatory picture, Russell is also quietly confident about Mercedes’ own prospects this weekend.
The team’s early-season edge has largely come from straight-line efficiency, a trait that could still prove decisive despite Suzuka offering only limited opportunities to deploy its low-drag advantages.
“It seems we have a low-drag car, which is good,” he continued. “I don’t know if it’s specifically due to the SM zones or if it’s the straight line itself.
“Obviously, every straight line we’ve been on so far has been an SM zone, so we can’t really disconnect the two, but the general thought is probably correct.”
That uncertainty hasn’t dented Russell’s optimism. If anything, it adds another layer of intrigue to a weekend already loaded with significance.
Because while Suzuka will always test drivers to their limits, in 2026 it may finally answer a much bigger question: have Formula 1’s sweeping changes truly made even its most unforgiving circuits come alive?
