The massively successful, toe-tapping track was included on Hall and Oates' album Bigger Than Both of Us in September 1976, before it came out as a single in January 1977—the same month it debuted on the Hot 100.

It was followed by "Private Eyes" that same year, and later by "Maneater" and "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" in 1982 and "Out of Touch" in 1984.
