ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We are starting off mostly sunny and mild, with morning temperatures in the mid 40s to mid 50s. Not bad! Temperatures will likely rise all the way to SIXTY today, but if you wanna go outside to enjoy it, you better do it before this afternoon as we are expecting a cold front to bring some heavy rain showers to move in around 2-3pm and last into the night. Half an inch to an inch of rain is possible, with a marginal threat for flash flooding in the Southern Tier. Some of these heavy showers may include a rumble of thunder for us, but it’s Illinois/Indiana/Ohio that will be seeing severe weather caused by this front today. Our Threat Tracker is Green thusly.
Behind the cold front comes much colder temperatures that last through Saturday. Both days will be in the thirties. We’ll have plenty of sun on Friday though, with partly cloudy skies on Saturday and a chance of flurries.
Next week is going to be a weird one. The upper level ridge that is causing the record warmth out west is going to budge to the east, bringing the potential for much warmer temperatures. However, it will be battling a persistent upper level trough parked in northeast Canada, and this will create a very tight temperature gradient from north to south. There is still a LOT of play in the timing and spacing of warmth versus cold, and modeling data has been very inconsistent. This means that the potential for warmth is certainly there, but we need to wait and see how these upper level patterns move over the next few days in order to nail down where that line between the warm and cold will be. Unfortunately, as that ridge moves east, another thing it will do is drive in moisture from the Gulf. As that moisture rides up into our region, it will create multiple days of gray and rain for our region. But again, the specific spacing of this rain is still uncertain. All in all, make sure to tune in over the next few days to see how the forecast develops.
