During a joint March 2026 interview on ColliderLadies Night, alongside her Ready or Not 2: Here I Come co-star, Kathryn Newton, Gellar revealed she requested to reshoot an important scene from the pilot episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which premiered in 1997.
"In the beginning, you know, Buffy comes to Sunnydale and Giles [Anthony Head] meets her and says, 'You know, I'm your Watcher.' And she's like, 'I don't want to do this. I want to be a normal [person].' It was a really big momentous scene and we shot it in the first episode," said Gellar in the ColliderLadies Night interview.
She said that she, however, had a better understanding of Buffy by the time she filmed the ninth episode of the series and wanted to reshoot the Season 1, Episode 1 scene.
"I went to the producers and I said, 'I know this is a crazy idea. I want to reshoot that scene.' And they were like, 'Why? It's good.' I'm like, 'Yeah, it's good, but I understand so much more. And we have this set. It's our standing set. If there's any way, even for an hour, if I could just get one more shot at it,'" recalled Gellar during her ColliderLadies Night interview.
Gellar said that producers agreed to let her re-film the scene.
"They took a chance and listened to me and they said, 'We only have one hour. Like, this is it. Take it or leave it.' And we re-shot that scene. And I think that scene is so much better because of it," continued the actress.
Sarah Michelle Gellar Said 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Was an Unexpected Hit
In a March 2026 interview with People magazine, Gellar said that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was an unexpected hit. She noted that the show was based off of Joss Whedon's 1992 film of the same name and was going to appear on a network that didn't have many viewers.
"We were doing a pilot for a network a lot of people didn't know about based on a movie that didn't have much success," said Gellar to People. "So, people really thought real highly of where we were going to go with this show. People kept telling me, 'Don't worry, you'll get a real show next year.'"
Gellar then said that those who doubted the show's success were eventually proven wrong.
"Worked out okay for me," quipped Gellar, who starred as Buffy for the show's seven-season run, which ended in 2003.
