The Chicago Cubs have officially set their 26-man roster for the start of the 2026 season, and they made several roster moves along the way.
The team had to make room on their 40-man roster for infielder Scott Kingery and outfielder Michael Conforto, and they did so by placing pitcher Justin Steele on the 60-day injured list as he continues his comeback from Tommy John surgery.
The Cubs also designated pitcher Jack Neely for assignment to clear another spot.
Conforto will be a key piece for the Cubs as they await the return of Seiya Suzuki, who injured his knee during the recent World Baseball Classic. In 418 at-bats last season, Conforto batted .199 with 12 home runs and 36 RBI’s, though he did have a .305 on-base percentage.
Kingery struggled in 29 plate appearances with the Angels, with a .148/.207/.185 slash line in his first MLB action since the 2022 season.
He’ll be the sixth infielder on the Cubs’ roster, with Matt Shaw serving as the other reserve player in that group.
The Cubs placed outfielder Suzuki on the 10-day injured list, and they also placed pitcher Porter Hodge (elbow strain) and Jordan Wicks (left forearm inflammation) on the 15-day injured list.
The Cubs will carry three catchers to start the season, though it is expected that Moises Ballesteros will primarily be used as a pinch-hitter and designated hitter while Miguel Amaya and Carson Kelly share duties behind the plate.
Here is the team’s full 2026 roster:
Pitchers – Ben Brown, Matthew Boyd, Edward Cabrera, Hunter Harvey, Cade Horton, Shota Imanaga, Phil Maton Hoby Milner, Daniel Palencia, Jameson Taillon, Caleb Thielbar, Jacob Webb
