Chili throws subtle shade at popular suburban Chicago steakhouse over ‘dress code

A popular steakhouse with locations in the Chicago suburbs is reminding restaurant goers that proper attire is “required” — and one famous neighborhood spot has thoughts.

As part of a dress code listed on its website, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, with locations across the U.S. and in Naperville, South Barrington and Northbrook, asks that diners remove all hats when entering.

“Guests wearing ball caps are asked to dine in the bar/lounge,” the dress code, described as “business casual” says.

The policy also goes on to say that certain attire is “not permitted” in its dining rooms, including “gym wear, pool attire, tank tops, clothing with offensive graphics or language, revealing clothing or exposed undergarments.”

The restaurant brand was acquired in 2023 by Darden Restaurants in its “fine dining” category typically have tables with white table cloths, napkins folded in a pyramid style, waiters often wearing ties. In a “First TIme Visitors Guide,” message posted to the restaurant’s website, the restaurant says many guests opt to dress-up for their meal with smart casual or semi-formal, adding those choices are “entirely optional.”

“You might see guests in everything from jeans and a nice top to a cocktail dress or suit and tie,” the post said. “We want everyone to feel comfortable, so whether you want to dress up or keep it casual, you’ll fit right in at Ruth’s Chris.”

“Additionally, exposed undergarments, cut-off shorts, and tank tops are not considered appropriate attire,” it went on to say.

Other popular restaurants in the Darden Group, including The Capital Grille, also have a dress code. But at least one famous chain restaurant took to social media to respond to the strict clothing policy, throwing some light shade in the process.

In a March 20 post commenting on the dress code, Chili’s said “the only dress code at Chili’s is that you have to be dressed.”

Chili’s response went viral, with more than one million views and nearly 800 comments.

It wasn’t immediately clear when Ruth’s Chris dress code started, or if it was new. NBC Chicago reached out to The Darden Group and Ruth’s Chris for comment on this story.
