The 2026 Major League Baseball season begins today, with the Yankees and Giants facing off for the first opening night game on Netflix at 7pm CT. Which is cool, but that doesn’t make today “Opening Day” in my book. That’s tomorrow …
Spring Training wrapped for the Cubs yesterday with an 8-3 loss to the Yankees, with Edward Cabrera getting knocked around again (including three homers in 4.1 innings). Honestly I think everyone just needs to get out of the brutal Arizona heat and turn on compete mode. Enough fake stuff. Real game time. Dylan Carlson made the Cubs as the final outfield addition out of camp, officially joining the 40-man roster. Craig Counsell explained that part of the reason is the depth aspect, which is always a factor in these situations, at least at the margins (Cubs.com): “Both Kevin [Alcantara] and [Carlson] had a good camp. Some of it is, we’re trying to preserve some depth here. I think that’s an important part of this. We have an outfielder down right now, and if you kind of go through it, the next thing that happens would be – without everybody intact – a little bit damaging. So we have some depth now.” In the end, the Cubs were able to keep ALL of Carlson, Alcantara, Michael Conforto, Justin Dean (optioned), and Chas McCormick (staying on his minor league deal, shoulder issue) to bolster the outfield depth that was looking pretty shaky back in February. These things often have a way of working themselves out, which is why you grab as much possible depth as you can before and during Spring Training. Seiya Suzuki is expected to travel with the team back to Chicago, which is a very mild sign that the Cubs do see this IL stint being relatively short. Doesn’t mean a one-week situation is a guarantee, but if he’d stayed back in Arizona to keep rehabbing, that would’ve been a bad sign for one-week hopes. Alex Bregman with a business-like summary of Cubs camp (Sun-Times): “The work has exceeded expectations. It’s a cohesive group, super-intelligent, and the work ethic has been outstanding. Every single day the preparation has been eye-opening, and it’s exciting to be part of a group like this.” Good, good, but this is a guy who is clearly ready to get down to the real thing. Speaking of which, Bregman homered in each of his final three Spring Training games, so let’s hope he carries that streak right over to tomorrow.Alex Bregman hits his 4th HR in 21 AB this spring and is now slashing .524/.583/1.286. pic.twitter.com/p9eWrRB5I5
— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) March 24, 2026 The Athletic ranked the 30 lineups and had the Cubs landing 7th overall, which feels about right to me on paper. We can’t assume health or repeats from 2025, but consider that the worst hitter in the Cubs’ lineup is … Dansby Swanson? Carson Kelly/Miguel Amaya? Pick whomever you want, but the short version is that, on paper, whichever guy you pick as the worst still has a pretty good chance at being an above-average bat this year. The Cubs may “feel” like a pitching/defense team, but this lineup has a chance to put up a lot of runs. Interestingly, the Brewers show up in the next spot, which seems to be more about their offensive upside than any kind of certainty. I do agree that there’s a lot of potential there for an offensive explosion if certain veterans stay healthy and certain young guys take another step forward. The Brewers picked up Jake Woodford from the Rays (he was on a minor league deal but wasn’t going to make the team). So that’s another pitcher who worked with the Cubs last year, and now gets a big league deal even after not pitching in the big leagues last year. Let’s hope the Cubs didn’t help him TOO much. — Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) March 24, 2026 Nick Lodolo will join Hunter Greene on the Injured List to open the season (they have shared a lot of time there together with the Reds), but the good news there for Lodolo is that it’s just blisters, so he’ll really only miss two possible regular season starts. The problem with this ranking is not in the placement of the Cubs’ hat, it’s in the categories themselves. That is to say, the Cubs’ hat is indeed arguably boring. But it is ALSO pretty clearly iconic:Current primary MLB hats ranked ranked off uniqueness, color scheme, and how iconic it is… pic.twitter.com/lULwpuiwUq
