The Cubs made the Dylan Carlson move officially official, selecting him to the 40-man roster while moving Tyler Austin to the 60-day Injured List to open up a spot. Conforto was a star when he was younger (much better than Carlson), and was very good as recently as 2024 (Carlson was only about average as recently as 2022). In other words, it’s a longer bet that Carlson bounces back to above-average at the plate in 2026 than Conforto, who was hitting the ball quite hard out in Arizona.
As for why it isn’t Shaw every day, I just don’t know that his bat projects to be THAT much better than Conforto’s to make up for his inexperience in right field, where one mistake can sink the day. Shaw adding right field to his tool box was about seeing if he could expand his versatility in a pinch, not about converting him into an outfielder.
That said, it really might just be a match-up thing – not just righty/lefty and traditional splits, but types of pitchers against types of hitters with types of pitch emphases – with all three of Conforto, Shaw, and Carlson until Suzuki is back.
