Three seniors made notable appearances in Alabama men’s basketball’s 90-65 win over Texas Tech on Sunday night. Each of them was only points away from breaking their season highs.
“I’m proud of the way they fought. These three seniors combined for 47 points,” head coach Nate Oats said. “I think everybody was locked in and was about the right stuff tonight.”
Senior guard Houston Mallette pulled away with 15 points, 4 away from his season high of 19 in the UNLV game, and he led the team in rebounds with 8 total. The strong performance came after Mallette walked away from the Hofstra game scoreless.
Mallette stayed out of foul trouble with no fouls committed in stark contrast to the rest of the Crimson Tide. Mallette was one of three players with no fouls, but the only one out of three who played the majority of the game.
“I don’t want to leave Alabama,” Mallette said. “I would die for this school. I love this place and these guys love it as well.”
Mallette also won the hard hat award, a team award given out to a different Alabama player each game based on a system of “blue-collar” points. Oats said he was more excited about that than any points he put up.
“Houston’s never been about himself,” Oats said. “I mean, he was shooting five for 3, there’s 15 points, 8 rebounds, and he was most excited about the fact he won the hard hat.”
Center Noah Williamson played only 13 minutes but finished with 8 points on the board — only 2 away from his season high against Kentucky — and 2 rebounds.
Williamson’s first points in the game came from a 3-pointer, leading the crowd in the International Benchmark Arena to chant his name.
“Noah hasn’t played like this, but he keeps telling me, ‘I don’t want to be the reason we lose,’” Oats said. “He’s just such a good kid.”
Senior guard Latrell Wrightsell contributed 4 rebounds and 24 points to the board, 1 point away from his season high of 25 that he set against Tennessee.
With guard Aden Holloway removed from campus pending a criminal case during the tournament, Wrightsell had the opportunity for more playing time and came out as the Crimson Tide’s highest scorer. Wrightsell shot 6/9 from 3-point range and 7/10 overall.
“You never want to stop playing,” Wrightsell said. “You don’t want it to end.”
