Cameras, concrete barriers and armed personnel are all normal things to see around a Jewish synagogue, but right now, the funding for security is frozen due to a partial government shutdown with the Department of Homeland Security.
“They are going to synagogue more often and it’s absolutely going to be on their minds that their synagogue is less secure,” said Rabbi Micah Greeland, the International Director of NCSY. “Or their communities are now more taxed paying for off duty police coverage.”
The season of Passover is drawing the faithful to services, and the teens Rabbi Micah Greenland works with regularly said they are fearful for going in and out of their place of worship.
“These are things that are now a generation ago, not the common experience of a Jewish student in middle school or high school, and today is commonplace,” Greenland explained.
Intimidation, bullying, and threats are on the rise against Jewish people in Chicago. According to the Department of Justice, antisemitic hate crimes were up 58 percent in 2025, despite the Jewish community accounting for only 3 percent of Chicago’s population.Just this week, the U.S. Attorney charged a Chicago man with threatening to “shoot up” a synagogue.
“It is very challenging timing for the Jewish community going to synagogue more,” Greenland said. “To potentially face a threat, that is with less protection.”
The DHS shutdown impacts grant reviewing and approvals and payment processing, which means millions of dollars are stuck in limbo until Congress can come to a compromise.
Synagogues receive a large share of the funding because it is based on risk. Other religions and houses of worship like churches and mosques also receive some funding, and are impacted by this shutdown, too.
