Chapel Hill Man Wins $1 Million Lottery Prize

Chapel Hill resident Joey Bass won a $1 million top prize on a $10 scratch-off game from the North Carolina Education Lottery, the organization announced Monday. Bass won one of four $1 million top prizes on the lottery’s Monopoly game, which debuted in November. He bought his winning picket from the Petro Mart on U.S. Highway 15-501 North in Chapel Hill.

Bass arrived at lottery headquarters in Raleigh Friday, where he chose a lump sum of $600,000 for his winnings. After required state and federal tax withholdings, Bass will take home $432,063.

According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, two of the four $1 million top prizes on the Monopoly game remain unclaimed. Education programs in Orange County received more than $8 million in lottery funds in 2025, the organization said in a release.
