The Harry Pritchett Running Park will be closed to the public beginning in April. Entries to the park will be limited to University of Alabama student athletes and competitive events.
The University of Alabama Arboretum, where the park is located, will remain open to the public. The running park is not located in the arboretum. Fences will be installed to keep the public from entering the trail’s parking lot while still allowing cars to continue on to the arboretum.
“For those looking for alternative places for walking or running, Tuscaloosa offers many beautiful outdoor trails a short distance from campus,” the UA News Center said.
These trails include the Tuscaloosa River Walk, the Randall Family Park, Sokol Park South, and Hurricane Creek Park.
In response to the news center’s announcement, a petition started by Rebecca Salzer, a professor in the Department of Theatre & Dance, to keep the park open to the public was posted in the park and has been circulating Tuscaloosa.
“We were shocked and saddened to learn this past week that the University plans to close this space to the public. There was no explanation given in this announcement, and this closure is contrary to the community service aspects of the University’s mission and vision,” the petition’s overview said.
“I was so saddened to see the closure to the public of the Harry Pritchett Running Park announced in UA News on March 10,” Salzer said. “Something about the perfunctoriness and lack of explanation in the announcement made me wonder if the University’s decision makers fully understand the importance of the running park to the campus and local communities.”
Salzer said she is unsure what a back-up plan for if the petition does not work would look like.
“We’re really hopeful that the University will be willing to talk and work with us before dividing up and defacing the park with what we imagine will be substantial amounts of fencing,” she said.
The petition has amassed over 1,000 signatures since its creation.
