Before Sunday’s matinee against the Predators, most of the questions for Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill were understandably about the pending arrival of top prospect Anton Frondell after his SHL ended on Saturday. The arrival of the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft is exciting; Alex Vlasic admitted after Sunday’s game that he’s heard Frondell has a big shot and they’re looking forward to him joining the team.
“He seems pretty lethal with the puck, so we’re pumped to get him,” Vlasic said.
The Hawks are still working on how and where he’ll join the team on the upcoming road trip. When he arrives, the plan is to “throw him to the fire” and play him with “a good player.” Which means all of the begging for Connor Bedard to have a better, more offensive winger on his line are about to be answered (even if Blashill wouldn’t directly confirm that’s Frondell’s destination).
Blashill said Frondell’s going to get top billing when he arrives.
“Based on the level of play he’s had all year, with how well he’s played the last part of the year, the fact there’s zero practice time at this time of the year, I’m a throw-him-in-the-fire kind of coach,” Blashill said before Sunday’s game. “Not always. It’s all situational. But in this one, he’s going to get thrown into the fire.”
So here’s where things get a little more intriguing with layers of context for Frondell. On the CHSN pregame show yesterday, Frank Seravalli said he expects Frondell to be on Bedard’s wing (BREAKING!). But the part that got my attention a little more was when he said Frondell could get some run at center as well.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 22, 2026Frondell being a left-shot means he could take faceoffs on his strong side while skating on a line with Bedard, who’s a right-handed center. But we’re going to have to wait to see how the coaches deploy those two top picks if/when they’re together.
But there’s another element to keep an eye on in the coming days: who’s the other wing with Bedard?
The context to layer on top came after the game when Blashill was asked about Ryan Greene‘s really good first professional season by Mark Lazerus. Blashill was complimentary of Greene’s season — and then threw in that he’ll probably get Greene some run at center at some point down the stretch.
Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesGreene’s game in the NHL has stood out because… it hasn’t stood out much. While we’ve watched “growing pain moments” from other guys in their first full professional seasons like Artyom Levshunov, Sam Rinzel and Nick Lardis at times, Greene’s been as steady as you could hope from a guy who admitted even he thought he was going to start the season in Rockford.
But Greene has earned a spot playing the wing with Bedard for a big portion of the season, and performed well there. The reasoning from Blashill was that Greene just plays a steady two-way game.
“He’s not chaotic in his game,” Blashill said. “His game’s pretty calm, and he’s pretty smart, so that helps him play with a guy like Connor, because he can read off him. He doesn’t have a lot of crazy moments. He just plays — I don’t want to say a simple game, but it’s simple enough. Yet (he) can make a pass and can make a good feed in those situations. He’s pretty good defensively. We’ll see where it goes.”
Blashill saying Greene could get some run at center down the stretch is likely a product of that being his natural position — he’s been good at the dot this year — as much as the organization wanting to see more of him there and Oliver Moore being done for the season.
Throw in that Sacha Boisvert, whose arrival is also coming soon, is also primarily a center and the discussions we’ve had in the past about the Blackhawks having a lot of guys who can play down the middle is going to become an immediate reality. There could — likely will — be a time between now and the end of the regular season where we could see the Blackhawks’ four lines centered by Bedard, Frank Nazar, Greene and Boisvert.
That should be exciting for Blackhawks fans. The future is developing in real time in the closing weeks of this regular season, with more waves of talent to come in training camp in September.
