New Zealand is all set to have its brand-new domestic tournament, just like other top cricket-playing nations. Actually, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has decided to launch a new T20 league called NZ20 in place of the Super Smash, and it is now their top priority for the future.
The New Zealand cricket board has already approved to work on the team licenses, money deals, sponsors, and full planning of the league for both men’s and women’s cricket.
The old system was based on local teams, but now the NZC is ready to move from a local team structure to a franchise-style league, just like big franchise tournaments around the world.
The NZC has taken this decision after serious discussions, where officials also considered joining Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League and Men’s Big Bash League before finally backing their own big “NZ20 concept."

NZC Board Chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon said in an official statement, "There was extensive discussion on the merits of these proposals, but the Board concluded that now’s the right time to revitalize our 21-year-old Super Smash competition.”
She added, “This followed broad consultation, particularly within our cricket network, and careful consideration of a wide range of information and advice, including the Deloitte report. The next steps include working with NZ20 to agree terms and seeking support from our members.”
NZ20 still under discussion as big decisions remain
Puketapu-Lyndon also stressed that NZ20 is just one step, not the final decision. She also explained that many changes still need to be discussed and agreed on before everything is finally confirmed.
The NZC chairman further noted, “In particular, we want to work with NZ20 to ensure it incorporates and supports the women’s domestic T20 competition and that it maintains a level of prominence and visibility consistent with NZC’s strategic commitment to the women’s game.”
She continued, “Ensuring regional representation of NZ20 teams so fans and aspiring young cricketers can see their heroes in action is also very important to the board, as is the question of ownership and control, including equity in the competition.”
On the other hand, Sophie Devine feels the NZ20 league can bring fresh energy to New Zealand cricket. She believes that more matches at home will help players and fans, and building such a tournament in New Zealand is the best way forward.
NZ20 launch plan ready, but big work still pending
Well, the full plan has been prepared by a special committee headed by Don MacKinnon, a top lawyer and head of New Zealand’s Sports Integrity Commission. MacKinnon also has strong experience working with the NZC.
The idea is also getting strong support from former stars like Stephen Fleming. The proposed T20 league is planned in a way similar to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where NZC will give the license, but the tournament will be run separately by its own management.
Earlier, the plan was to start NZ20 in January 2027, but now, with so much work still left, including teams, sponsors, and structure, it may take more time to materialize this idea.
