When Americans start planning international getaways, many of us fail to think of our neighbors to the north. That's because southern jaunts get all of the attention, what with many people looking to spend their vacation traveling to the sandy shores of Mexico. However, new data seems to point to an uptick in Americans crossing the border into Canada when looking for the perfect getaway, marking a change in longstanding patterns.
So, where exactly are Americans going when they head up to The Great White North? Keep reading as I break it down.

The Number of U.S. Visitors to Canada Increases for the First Time in a Year
According to USA Today, February 2026 was a big month for U.S. tourists heading to Canada. The publication quoted figures provided by the National Travel and Tourism Office, which says Canada saw "the first increase after 12 consecutive months of year-over-year declines" when it comes to U.S. visitors. According to them, around 959,600 Americans crossed the boarder, with an estimated 720,400 entering the country by car and another 239,200 by air.

So, why is Canada experiencing an American tourism boom? It may have to do with the fact that Canada looks like the perfect spot for a quick getaway. "And that's because of this shared culture, this shared partnership, the shared friendship that we have between our countries, as well as obviously, the sheer proximity," Joe Amati, Senior Executive Director of Global Market and Brand Intelligence at Destination Canada told the publication.
Where Are Americans Headed When Visiting Canada
The last time I visited Canada, it was to see Niagara Falls. And while Niagara used to be a popular place for Americans looking for a quick visit to the country (there was actually a time when you could cross the border without a passport), it's not the only place people are heading for vacations.
A Reddit user by the name @sufinomo asked the Buy Canadian subreddit which parts of the country were good for Americans who were looking to book a stay, which garnered a lot of really good results. According the other commenters, there are quite a few places that are worth checking out.
For the outdoorsy types, there were plenty of suggestions that involved a lot of exploring in the wild.
"The Maritimes are beautiful," one person wrote. "You can visit Halifax, then rent a car and visit Nova Scotia! People are super friendly I found!"
One person pointed out that Halifax is in Nova Scotia, which earned clarification that the poster meant it was worth leaving the city to explore the rest of the providence.
This region got several other votes, with people adding New Brunswick and Newfoundland to the list, including a more detailed response that included the suggestion of traveling to Cap Breton for the Cabot Trail and Prince Edward Island, where dining on beer and lobster are a must on the to-do list.

For those who would rather stick to cityscapes, there were some alternative suggestions. "Montreal is awesome, as is Québec City," another person wrote. "And if you go to Montreal by bus, the sky's the limit from there with train travel." Ottawa also got a mention, from this Reddit user, who said that there was "no shortage of places to visit."

VictoriaKootenayEdmontonTorontoVancoverAlgonquinMuskokaNo matter where you're headed, it doesn't sound like you'll be alone, since Americans seem very keen to cozy up to their northern neighbors these days. And, with fuel prices continuing to climb, it could be the best chance many folks have at taking an international vacation this spring and summer thanks to its proximity to the U.S.
