The Andrew stench is worsening. And Charles and William can’t escape it

“The law,” declared the King as his brother was carted off to a police station last month “must take its course”. And Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is now living that reality.

According to a report by The Times quoting police sources, the investigation into his activities over many years may now be widening. As he sits alone in his new, reduced surroundings on his brother’s Sandringham estate, Mountbatten-Windsor will have plenty of time to muse about what the police might have discovered during their extensive forensic search of his homes.

He has consistently denied any wrongdoing, but his mind must surely be turning over what documents might have been found, what emails or texts on his computers and phones might prove of interest to an investigating officer.

These latest reports that police may be looking beyond the alleged offence of misconduct in public office must have rattled him. Officers are said to be considering looking into other potential corruption offences on top of a scoping inquiry into alleged sex trafficking. It’s clear that the former Prince cannot expect any special treatment. Even in the peace and quiet of the Norfolk countryside, his squeaky bum moments are far from over.

The Epstein files have already spawned a rash of embarrassing and shocking email exchanges and pictures. And there may be more to come. Pressure is mounting on the American authorities to release unredacted documents. Who knows what they could reveal?

Andrew could, however, be taking some solace in the knowledge that the bar for proving misconduct in public office is notoriously high. For a start, there is some question over whether acting as a trade envoy for the UK when he was a working member of the Royal family even meets the definition of a public official. And then there are other criteria such as proof that the accused wilfully misconducted themselves in a way that amounts to an abuse of the public’s trust. The police have their work cut out, and Andrew and his lawyers know it.

He could even be thinking that the high level of proof required for the misconduct charge to stick could be his get-out-of-jail-free card (though of course his protestations of innocence suggest he doesn’t feel he needs one).

One thing is certain: this investigation has some way to go yet. For the foreseeable future, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will have to live under the shadow of alleged wrongdoing. And, in the court of public opinion, it’s hard to see how he can ever clear his name.

For the rest of the Royal family, all of this means that the Mountbatten-Windsor horror show is going to continue. They have all but disowned him, but the stench of his prolonged friendship with a convicted paedophile lingers on. And so the King, the Queen and other senior members of the Royal family have to live with the consequences: protesters, with their banners and megaphones, hurling abuse at them as they go about their public duties.

The disgraced former prince has much to answer for.
