POINT LOMA – It’s been a decade since the former U.S. Navy chow hall in Liberty Station was reimagined, reborn and relaunched as Liberty Public Market, transforming it into a food marketplace.
Now, the market’s 10th anniversary is being commemorated with a weekend-long celebration of its success and longevity.
“We have quite a bit of stuff going on all weekend,” said Vinny Spatafore, Liberty Public Market’s director of front of house operations.
“We’ve got live music, we’ve got vendor specials, we have a dog adoption, we have a beer collaboration of our own beer,” he added. “Lots of different things going on.”
Among the one-of-a-kind events are a series of live bands that will perform between 10:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
In addition, at least 20 of the market’s 37 food vendors will offer $10 anniversary specials. A wide variety of vendors will have specials, including a coffee shop, a pizza place, a donut vendor, a lobster restaurant, and a taqueria.
Plus, there’s a unique beer that’s being brewed just for the occasion. The market has partnered with North Park-based Fall Brewing Co. to create the LPM10 IPA, a West Coast IPA with citra, simcoe and Chinook hops.
It’ll be available starting Saturday, and from 5-9 p.m., a special tasting with Fall Brewing is scheduled for the market’s main patio area.
Spatafore, who has been with the market since its beginning, said it started as just a single 25,000 square-foot building, but has continued to grow to the point where it now attracts thousands of visitors daily and hundreds of thousands of people each month.
“I’m really happy to see that the market has stayed consistent and that it has continued to carry its momentum and only gotten better,” he said. “In our busy months, there are days when I’m there and I can’t even move there are so many people. It’s insane.”
Even after 10 years, the market’s continuing to expand, he said.
“We just expanded into the space next door; we acquired that. We also took over a bigger patio, as well,” he said. “It’s been just a huge success all around.”
What he likes about the market is that it gives so many of the small eateries the experience of knowing what it’s like to run their own brick-and-mortar restaurant for the first time.
“We really support our vendors and we’re happy to have these small spaces with talented individuals having great food and providing a good atmosphere for Liberty Market,” he said, not to mention that “so many vendors that have gone on and done great things.
“It’s been a really good experience,” he added. “I’m excited to continue it.”
