A Dead Characters Live Text, Justin Trudeau, and a Pity Party: Inside the Firefly Announcement Panel

Nathan Fillion walked onto the Awesome Con stage Saturday morning and promptly handed his prepared remarks to Firefly co-star Sean Maher. 'I don't have my glasses,' Fillion explained. What followed was the cast of Firefly passing pages down the panel table, each one reading a line as 'Nathan Fillion,' to announce that an animated Firefly series is in development, with the original cast attached.

The announcement had been teased on social media for weeks, and the room was ready. But the panel itself delivered moments that went well beyond the news.

Fillion confirmed the animated series would be set between the original Fox run and the 2005 film Serenity, filling in stories the show never got to tell. He was blunt about what he is and isn't interested in. 'There was an idea thrown around about we'll tell some stories about before Serenity and we'll tell some stories about after Serenity,' he said. 'I said I'm not interested in what happens after Serenity. I'm only interested in what happens before Serenity with all my friends.'

That means Wash. Alan Tudyk, who played the beloved pilot killed in Serenity, said he'd been pitching story ideas for years, including one where Wash spent time in a wartime prison entertaining fellow prisoners with shadow puppets. He also admitted that rewatching the series recently broke him a little. 'There was a point where I would have to pause it and stop it and drop the remote and stomp around my living room and go, 'Why was this cancelled? Are you kidding me?.' Tudyk said he watches YouTube reaction videos specifically to see new viewers hit the moment Wash dies. 'It's like one of my favorite things to do.'

Mid-panel, Fillion got a live text from David Krumbholtz who played Mr. Universe in the film, which he read aloud. 'I wish my character weren't dead. Thrilled for all of you.' Fillion texted back: 'We're going back in time. You're still alive.'

The cast also reflected on what 25 years of fan loyalty actually feels like. Gina Torres described reading a letter that morning from military fans about Zoe's impact on them. Jewel Staite said simply 'I just wanted Kaylee and Simon to have babies.' Morena Baccarin said she's still curious about Inara's backstory and why the character was running. Fillion shared that even Justin Trudeau reached out during the social media tease via text saying, 'You better not be messing with me, Fillion. I know people.'

Fillion encouraged fans to pitch in as the proposed animated series still needs to find a home. There's a rapidly growing grassroots fan push to organize a variety of ways to help. (More on that later).

The cancellation still stings, apparently. Fillion recalled the cast gathering at his house when Fox pulled the show while they were still filming. 'It really sucked the life out of us,' he said. 'And then everyone was determined to suck every last bit of joy out of that program that they could.'
