Richard Hatch is responding after Lisa Kudrow’s bold comments about his Survivor win.
The reality TV pioneer, who won the very first season of Survivor in 2000, addressed the Friends star’s remarks in a statement, pushing back on her characterization of his gameplay.
“I’m disappointed in Lisa. It is ironic that someone so richly rewarded for playing roles and celebrating superficiality feels comfortable imagining she has any idea who I am,” Hatch, 64, said to Men’s Journal on Wednesday, March 18.
Kudrow’s comments came during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter while discussing the origins of her satirical series The Comeback, which was partly inspired by early reality television. Reflecting on Survivor’s debut season, she didn’t mince words about Hatch’s win.
“I saw the very first season of Survivor and loved it. What a phenomenal show, but the guy who won was despicable. How do people say that he played a better game worthy of $1 million? Why aren’t you rewarding the person who played a great game, didn’t stoop to his level and was a shining example of humanity? That person should get $1 million. I remember thinking, ‘This is the end of civilization.’”

Hatch, however, sees things very differently—and says public perception has shifted over time. “Lisa’s comment is reminiscent of so many viewers 25 years ago who lacked the presence of mind to understand the beautiful game of Survivor,” he said to the outlet. “Long ago now, people began to understand the game’s rules and credit me for having so quickly figured out how to play so well.”
He went on to defend his strategic approach, emphasizing that competition was always at the heart of the show.“The game’s rules (outwit, outlast, outplay) are not dissimilar from other well-known, take-no-prisoners games. Imagine a football player tapping his opponent on the shoulder to let him know he is about to tackle him. How boring would that be? We participants signed up, knowing the rules, to compete for a prize, and I won, fairly and squarely.”

Despite the renewed criticism, Hatch made it clear he stands by his legacy, and believes Kudrow’s opinion might change with more context. “I’m very proud of my accomplishment, and were Lisa to have taken the time to learn anything about me before sharing her opinion, I’d like to think that opinion would be markedly different from the one she expressed today.”
