Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is facing a recall effort over his response to the Nancy Guthrie kidnapping case.
Nanos has been leading the investigation since Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, went missing on Feb. 1.
Though Nancy has not been found, authorities believe she was kidnapped in the early morning hours of Feb. 1—citing doorbell camera footage that shows a masked individual at her front door and ransom notes sent to new outlets. No suspect has been identified.
As the search enters its seventh week, Daniel Butierez, a Republican congressional candidate in Arizona, is among those gathering signatures in an effort to remove Nanos, an elected Democrat, from office, according to NewsNation.
On Katie Pavlich Tonight on Tuesday, Mar. 17, Butierez said Nanos' alleged mishandling of the case “was just the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
"It’s a shame that crime has risen to this point in our community, and I can’t blame just Nanos. We have failed leadership in Pima County,” he said.

Tuscon outlet 13 News confirmed with the Pima County Elections Department that the recall effort was launched on Thursday, Mar. 12.
“We’re aware of the recall, and it’s the right of the people,” Nanos told 13 News. “We’ll always honor the will of the people, and that’s what makes democracy.”
Butierez and other recall supporters have 120 days to collect 120,000 signatures to trigger the actual recall. The number of signatures required to qualify for the ballot is 25% of the number of votes cast in the last election for that office.
If enough signatures are gathered, a recall election will be held. All qualified candidates can run against Nanos, and whoever gets the most votes wins the office.
If the Nanos wins, he will remain in office and no other recall can occur during that term unless the proponents pay the cost of the prior recall election.

The recall effort comes just days after Nanos addressed discrepancies in his resume, and a $1.35 million lawsuit was filed against him and his department by an inmate.
The FBI urges anyone with tips or leads related the Nancy Guthrie's disappearance to call 1-800-CALL-FBI in addition to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office number, 520-351-4900. A $1 million reward is currently being offered for information leading to the safe return or recovery of Nancy.
