Legendary 90s Rocker, With Iconic No. 1 Hit, Turns 60

It's a big day for grunge icon Jerry Cantrell.

Best known as the guitarist and co-lead vocalist for Alice in Chains, Cantrell is celebrating his 60th birthday today, March 18, 2026.

Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, Cantrell had his sights set on a musical career from the start. As Rolling Stone reported in 1996, when he was a little boy, the future chart-topper took a copy of Dr. Seuss' My Book About Me and filled in the sentence, "When I grow up I want to be a..." with the words "rock star."

Before that dream came true, Cantrell struggled through some hard times as a struggling young musician — particularly the death of his mother, who died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 43 in 1987, per South Sound Talk. Shortly after his mother's passing, however, Cantrell met lead singer Layne Staley — and one of the most important musical partnerships of the grunge era was born.

Alice in Chains released their debut album, Facelift, in 1990, dedicating it to both Jerry's late mother and his friend Andrew Wood (lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died that same year). Facelift, which included the hit "Man in the Box," went on to achieve double-platinum status.

The band's next release was the 1992 acoustic EP Sap, followed by their second full-length album, Dirt, which was also released in 1992 and went quadruple platinum. Their 1994 acoustic EP, Jar of Flies (1994), was the first EP ever to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 and spawned the band's first #1 single on the Mainstream Rock charts, "No Excuses" (follow-up single "I Stay Away" hit #10, while the last single, "Don't Follow," peaked at #25). Alice in Chains released by their third self-titled studio album in 1995, which was followed by a legendary MTV Unplugged performance in 1996. Unfortunately, Alice in Chains went on hiatus after that due to Staley's substance issues. (The singer died in 2002.) Alice in Chains reunited in 2005; the next year, William DuVall joined as rhythm guitarist and co-lead singer. The band has released three more albums since then.

Cantrell has also released several solo albums, including 2024's I Want Blood.

“The title track is a celebration of your life and your time here,” he told Guitar Player when the album came out. “It’s written as if you were facing off in a boxing ring with time, and time is basically saying to you, ‘Come on, what d’ya got? I want blood. I want your best.’"

I Want Blood features appearances from fellow rockers such as bassists Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) and Robert Trujillo (Metallica), drummer Mike Bordin (Faith No More, Ozzy Osbourne) and others.

“They’re my extended family,” Cantrell said. "And on top of being people that I care about deeply on a personal level, they're inspiring f—king musicians who have been in and worked with some of my favorite bands in the world.”
