ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester City School District teachers and faculty are still dealing with missed and incorrect paychecks a year after payroll problems began with the Oracle system.
Significant Decline in Impacted Checks
The teacher’s union said it’s dealing with very few impacted people. During the last pay period, the district had just a handful of complaints from employees saying their checks were wrong in some way.
The district said it’s seeing about the same number of discrepancies it did two years ago; before the switch. However, paraprofessionals are speaking out, tired and feeling defeated.
“I’d like to say first I love my job,” a paraprofessional of 19 years said. “But missed payment, short payment or no payments during the summer months have made it difficult and we are unable to sustain our families.”
She’s not the only one. Laila McFadden, another paraprofessional just two years in, feels like her words are falling on deaf ears.
“We are asking to be paid correctly. We are asking for a fair raise and we are asking for transparency. We are also asking for our voices to lead to action,” McFadden said.
Uncertain Futures
“Two years ago I came into this district unsure if teaching was my path, but working closely with students, many from poverty, changed me, but from June 2025, up until now, my experience has made me question whether that future is still possible,” McFadden said.
Her final words were direct.
“And get rid of Oracle. Thank you,” McFadden said.
The district is looking at options to replace Oracle, as News10NBC has reported. It’s currently interviewing for new platforms. The district will continue to narrow that down in coming weeks.
Back-to-School Hiring
Ahead of the new school year in less than one month, the district is trying to hire more than 250 positions before the school year starts in less than a month.
