Donald Trump said people with learning disabilities should not be allowed to become president, as he took aim at Democratic rival and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump cited Newsom’s public discussion of his dyslexia, and suggested such conditions should disqualify someone from the presidency.
Newsom has been open about his struggle with dyslexia, which he was diagnosed with aged five.
“Gavin Newscum has admitted that he is a — that he has learning disabilities,” Trump told reporters.
“Honestly, I’m all for people with learning disabilities, but not for my president. I don’t want – I think a president should not have learning disabilities, okay?” Trump said.
“And I know it’s highly controversial to say such a horrible thing – the president of the United States. Gavin Newscum admitted that he has learning disabilities, dyslexia, everything about him is dumb.”
Newsom is seen as a potential Democratic presidential candidate in the 2028 election and often trades barbs with the US President, who has nicknamed the Californian “Newscum.”

Last week Trump told an audience in Kentucky that Newsom has “admitted he has mental problems,” before suggesting his dyslexia was disqualifying for a presidential run.
Newsom’s press office quickly responded that “Grandpa’s talking about himself again” and encouraged him to “seek mental treatment.”
Trump made similar comments on Friday in an interview with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade.
Earlier this month Trump also wrote on TruthSocial that Newsom was “A Cognitive Mess!” and said he had a “mental disorder.”
The governor responded to that in a social media post saying: “I spoke about my dyslexia. I know that’s hard for a brain-dead moron who bombs children and protects pedophiles to understand.”
According to the International Dyslexia Association, dyslexia is a learning disability that is defined by difficulties in word reading or spelling that involve accuracy and speed.
In February, Newsom publicly discussed his lower SAT score and said he does not read speeches as governor due to his dyslexia.
In an interview with CNN he said: “It’s turned out to be a blessing, and in politics, a huge blessing.”
“It’s the greatest thing in hindsight to happen to me. I mean, I have the freedom of not having to be stuck on the written text, and the freedom of having to work harder, more reps behind the scenes,” he said.
“I’m doing — if you think you’re working hard, trust me, I’m two to three times in terms of the work.”
