The proud Los Angeles Dodgers franchise will not have to shut down after all.
It’s hard to say just how impoverished the organization has become, but one can only assume the situation was well beyond dire if they are doing this:
NEWS: The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a deal with fashion giant Uniqlo to become Dodger Stadium’s official field presenting partner, multiple sources tell The Athletic. An official announcement is expected before Opening Day. t.co/ZDrVJNC1ps
— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) March 16, 2026It’s the first time in the 64-year history of Dodger Stadium that there will be a sponsor attached to the ballpark in this way. There’s no word in the report on how much the deal is for, or how long.
I guess it was already worth it for Uniqlo, by the way, because I’d never heard of them until this moment (apparently it’s a big fashion brand that originated in Japan). That’s probably on me – I am not cool – but there probably will be some additional name/brand recognition forthcoming for what must be a truly significant investment.
Of note here, “Dodger Stadium” is staying “Dodger Stadium.” What Uniqlo is buying is the naming rights for the playing field (together with all the other sponsorship stuff), which is a bit of an okey-doke way of the Dodgers getting to have their cake and eat it, too. The Athletic reports that it’ll probably be called Uniqlo Field at Dodger Stadium.
It’s something many folks have speculated about the historic franchises at historic ballparks doing, since – for example – the Chicago Cubs are never going to change the name of Wrigley Field to some sponsor’s name. But would they ever do Coca-Cola Park at Wrigley Field, or whatever? Harder to say. I tend to hope they don’t, since it feels really tacky, but if the Dodgers are willing to do it, maybe all bets are off.
No word yet on whether Uniqlo is deferring any of the payments to the Dodgers.
